Over the weekend, the Gaels experienced tremendous upsets and heartbreak. Women's volleyball lost to No. 17 San Diego on Thursday 3-2, but came back on Saturday ready to play and defeated Santa Clara 3-2. As for men's soccer, the Gaels shutout Gonzaga in a 3-0 win, but ended its five-game unbeaten streak to Portland in a 3-2 loss. Men's tennis competed in the Battle in the Bay Classic and had players advance to the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles. The cross country team participated in the Bronco Invitational where both men's and women's teams set new personal-records. Women's tennis hosted a tournament where players qualified to the finals in both doubles and singles. Finally, women's soccer suffered two losses this weekend to Loyola Marymount and Portland, dropping to 9-5-2, 0-3-1 WCC.
The Saint Mary's volleyball team almost pulled off an upset against No. 17 San Diego on Thursday night, losing 3-2. Sophomore Jordan Shaw led the Gaels with 15 kills on 33 swings, 20 digs, six blocks and just one error. They came back Saturday night to face off against Santa Clara and rallied to defeat the Broncos 3-2, improving to 3-5 WCC.
Men's soccer eliminated Gonzaga 3-0 on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Justin Howard scored two goals while Austin Bravo added another, improving the Gaels to 3-0-2 WCC. Sunday afternoon however, the team couldn't pull out the win. With a second-half lead, Portland scored the go-ahead goal, going up 3-2 and the Gaels couldn't score again. This loss ended a five-match winning streak for Saint Mary's.
Members of the Saint Mary's men's tennis team competed in the Battle in the Bay Classic hosted by San Francisco. Saad Benkirane and Gavin Leon both lost in the quarterfinals for singles play. In doubles, Leon and Maxime Olivan were eliminated in the quarterfinals as well.
As for Saint Mary's women's tennis, doubles duo Jenny Jullien and Jade Frampton earned a spot in the finals when defeated Sacramento State 9-7. Catherine Isip and Anna Chkhikvishvili proceeded to the finals as well with wins over UC Davis, 9-8 (6). For singles play, both Isip and Jullien advanced to the semi-finals.
Men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara University. Despite struggles, both teams managed to set personal-records. Freshman T.J. Brown-Pinizzotto finished in 26:58, a 52 second improvement. For the women, freshman Cristina Garcia improved her personal-record to 18:35, 13 seconds faster.
The Saint Mary's women's soccer team lost both games this weekend. On Friday, they fell to Loyola Marymount 2-1. On Sunday, the team battled Portland and lost 7-4. Players Christina Tognetti, Alyssa Stearns, Jordan Marada, and Daelyn Paul all scored for the Goals. This drops the Gaels to 0-3-1 WCC.
