Saint Mary's athletics had an eventful weekend, battling opponents in Moraga and even in Boston, Mass. Women's volleyball defeated USF 3-1 on Thursday, but suffered a loss to Loyola Marymount on Saturday night 3-2. The women's tennis team traveled to Stanford University to compete in the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships where two doubles teams proceeded to the Round of 16. Men's tennis competed in the same tournament where both doubles and singles players advanced. Saint Mary's Women's Rowing competed at the 47th annual Head of the Charles Regatta and placed 15th in the four-boat event. Finally, women's soccer faced two losses to USD and Pepperdine, falling to 9-7-2, 0-5-1 WCC.
The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team defeated USF in four sets on Thursday night at USF's War Memorial Gym. Leading the Gaels was sophomore Jordan Shaw, who had a career-high 18 kills and 10 digs. This improves the team to 10-1 WCC. However, on Saturday night, they fell to Loyola Marymount 2-3. Gabby Jolly and Jordan Shaw helped the Gaels with their offensive play. Shaw recorded yet another double-double, her eighth of the season, and had a career-high 20 kills. Jolly finished with 15 kills on 30 swings and only three errors.
Women's tennis participated in the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship as two Gael pairs advanced to the Round of 16. Sophomore duo Jade Frampton and Jenny Jullien easily defeated Washington State 8-3. Catherine Isip and Anna Chkhikvishvili also won 8-3 against the University of Pacific.
For the Gaels rowing team, they headed to Boston where they competed in the Head of the Charles Regatta, one of the most prestigious races of the year. The Gaels placed 15th in the varsity-four boat.
The Saint Mary's men's tennis team competed in the 2011 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Saturday, with two doubles teams and one singles player advancing to the Round of 16. Dynamic duo Gavin Leon and Maxime Olivan easily defeated their opponent 8-1. Also advancing were Steven Dawson-Roberts and Joakim Norstrom, topping their competition 8-4. As for singles, Olivan defeated Nick Kamisar in three sets, advancing to play the No. 1 seed and No. 14 ranked players.
Women's soccer lost a close match in overtime to the University of San Diego 2-1 on Friday night. Christina Tognetti scored SMC's only goal, her seventh of the year, while Jordan Marada gained her 10th assist of the year. On Sunday afternoon, they battled against No. 4 Pepperdine but lost 2-1. Marada scored her ninth goal of the year, but SMC could not deliver with a tying goal within the final five minutes.
