Saint Mary's Weekend Recap

For this past weekend, the Saint Mary's women soccer team defeated USF 1-0 to grab their 10th win of the season. Women's volleyball upset No. 17 USD on ESPNU on Wednesday. Men's tennis hosted the Gael Classic where both singles and doubles matches proceeded to the quarter and semi-finals. The men's golf team competed in the Cabo Collegiate as junior Mac McClung lead the Gael's to a 3rd place victory. Men's soccer had a uneven weekend, losing to Portland 4-0 on Friday but coming back to beat Gonzaga 3-2. Saint Mary's cross country teams participated in the WCC Championships with Rajpaul Pannu and Natalie Sojka as the frontrunners for the Gael's. Lastly, women's rowing competed in the Head of the American with seven boats participating in three different races.

The week began with the SMC women's volleyball team upseting No. 17 San Diego in five sets on national television. For the first time since 2008 the Gaels have defeated San Diego in Jenny Craig Pavilion, winning 3-2 (17-25, 27-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-10) Wednesday evening.

Women's soccer shutout USF 1-0 Sunday afternoon to improve their record to 10-7-2, 1-5-1 WCC. Christian Tognetti scored her eighth goal of the season in the first half. Their final match will be against BYU on Saturday, November 5th where seniors Alyssa Stearns and Ashley Soro will be honored in a brief Senior Day Ceremony before the 1:00pm kickoff.

Saint Mary's men's tennis team hosted the Gael classic and had advances for singles and doubles. Freshman Wil Martin won the Blue Singles Division title while Maxime Olivan lost in the semi-finals of the tournament. In doubles action, duo Gavin Leon and Olivan defeated USF 8-4 to advance to the semifinals, as did partners Sherif Hamdy and Saad Benkirane.

Men's golf headed to participate in the Cabo Collegiate tournament, where junior Mac McClung recorded his third best individual round of the day, leading the Gael's to a third-place finish.

As for men's soccer, they were shutout 4-0 against Portland on Friday night. However, Sunday afternoon the men came back looking for a victory. They took down Gonzaga 3-2 with Agustin Cazarez scoring in the 89th minute to give the Gaels the win. Senior goalkeeper Doug Herrick recorded his 23rd career victory, breaking the previous school record.

Cross country headed to compete in the WCC Championship Race to finish out their season. For the men, redshirt sophomore Rajpaul Pannu finished in 25th place, running 25:35. For the women, senior Natalie Sojka improved her overall time by running 22:38, which earned her 32nd place in the race.

Finally, Saint Mary's women's rowing team competed at the Head of the American on Lake Natoma. The Gael's brought seven boats that participated in three races. The novice-8 race B team placed fifth out of 17, while the A boat came in 9th and the C boat placed 16th. Later on in the race, the collegiate-8 boat finished 11th out of 17 boats. The afternoon ended with the collegiate-4 race, with the B boat placing 13th out of 23 boats.
