Men's soccer was the highlight for the weekend, defeating No. 25 CSU Bakersfield in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament. The Gaels proceeded to play No. 7 UC Irvine, claiming a 2-1 victory to move on to the Sweet Sixteen. Women's volleyball grabbed their sixth straight win of the season as they head into their season finale. They have swept four matches straight, a new program record for consecutive sets won. Saint Mary's women's basketball struggled against UC Santa Barbara Thursday night, losing 61-52 but pulled out a close, 68-67 victory over Pacific.
Thursday night, Saint Mary's men's soccer team battled against No. 25 CSU Bakersfield in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament, winning 1-0. This win was SMC's first NCAA Tournament win after the 2009 squad lost 4-0 at Stanford. The match remained nearly scoreless for the entire first half until Godinez sent a free-kick into the box for Mohoric to head in the ball. This was goalkeeper Doug Herrick's third consecutive shutout, making the grand total of shutouts for the season 11. After the win, the Gaels played No. 7 UC Irvine Sunday night. Sophomore Justin Howard headed in the winning goal in the 103rd minute, giving the Gaels a 2-1 victory. SMC advances to the Sweet Sixteen where they will face off against Brown. The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team earned its sixth consecutive win in a 3-0 shutout over Santa Clara. Junior Gabby Jolly led the Gaels with 14 kills on 23 swings with only two errors. Sophomore Jordan Shaw also hit in double-figures, recording 10 kills to accompany her six days and three service ages. Saint Mary's will play their 2011 season finale on Saturday, November 29 at 2:00 p.m. against Seattle University at McKeon Pavilion.
Women's basketball lost 61-52 to UC Santa Barbara Thursday night. With the loss, the Gaels drop to 1-2 in preseason. The team was led by Jasmine Smith with 16 points while Jackie Nared added 13 points. Saturday night, however, the Gaels pulled off a nail-biter, beating Pacific 68-67. Jackie Nared's step back jumper with 2.4 seconds left gave SMC the lead and the victory. Alex Carbonel had 12 points while freshman Carli Rosenthal recorded a double-double, 11 points and 14 rebounds. Saint Mary's is back in action on Friday, November 25 when it hosts Virginia Tech in the SMC Hilton-Concord Classic.
