Marty Storti stepped foot on the Saint Mary's College campus in 1984 as a freshman, eager to learn and face new challenges presented to him. He never thought that in 2011 he would be still be at SMC, now working as the Associate Director of Athletics for Administration.
Q: What duties do you perform as the Associate Director of Athletics for Administration?
Storti: My administrative oversights include being part of a leadership team solely for my department and overseeing all of the sports teams and programs. I am also in charge of all recreational sports, club sports, summer camps, athletic training, strength and conditioning, human resources, and strategic planning.
Q: Do you have an athletic background?
Storti: In high school, I played just about every sport available: football, soccer, basketball, baseball, wrestling, and track and field. In college, I played football and baseball and then joined rugby my senior year.
Q: What are a few of your hobbies?
Storti: Everything I do revolves around my children.
Q: What has been your favorite moment at SMC?
Storti: My favorite moment at SMC? I would have to say that I have many but I'll narrow it down to two. The first was when I was a student playing football and the team beat our rival, Santa Clara in 1985. The second would be when I recruit a player for rugby and get to watch them mature, get involved with the community, graduate, and then become successful.
Q: What is your favorite drink from Starbucks?
Storti: Triple grande non-fat no whip white mocha.
Q: Why were you attracted to work at SMC?
Storti: I've been here and have never been able to leave. It was a special place as soon as I walked onto the campus. I've had opportunities to make more money at other jobs, but I've always decided that staying here was better for me.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the Lamorinda/Walnut Creek area?
Storti: I love taking my kids to Roscoe's in Walnut Creek. However, after the men's basketball games, my wife and I stop at Chow's in Lafayette to enjoy a nice dinner after the game.
Q: How did you get started in college athletics? What was your career path?
Storti: I was a student athlete that graduated in 1988 and upon graduation, I had the option to sell life insurance, play a "fifth" year of rugby, or coach football as a grad student. By getting involved early on with SMC, I had so many opportunities given to me. I was soon hired to be in charge of student activities. Additionally, I received my Masters from Saint Mary's grad program. I worked countless hours of overtime and was coaching, which helped prepare me administratively. I then was hired to be the Director of Student Recreation, which took me away from the sports and focused more on the administrative aspect. During this time, I was a Resident Director for 10 years. Eventually, I was hired full-time to the position I currently hold.
Q: How long have you worked at SMC?
Storti: I've been the Associate Director for around 10 years, and worked at Saint Mary's for 31 years.
Q: What are the most repeated artists on your iPod?
Storti: I have a wide variety of music, but my favorites are Jimmy Hendrix, ACDC, Robin Ford, and Tracey Chapman.
Q: What have been the keys to your success thus far?
Storti: My coaching experience definitely helped me in this position as well as having positive energy at all times.
Q: What advice would you give to undergrads pursuing your career field?
Storti: Internship opportunities are critical because not only are you getting the practical experience but also being mentored by someone who's being doing this for a while.
