Saint Mary's Weekend Recap

Saint Mary's athletics had a series of highs and lows throughout the weekend. For women's volleyball, the Gaels defeated both Portland and Gonzaga while on the road. Men's soccer received both a win and a loss, with their record now 5-3-2 in WCC. Women's soccer played their final game of the season, with a 4-1 loss to BYU. Finally, cross country was invited to participate in Doc Adams Invitational, sending six runners to compete.

The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team defeated the Pilots in five sets in Portland. The Gaels had five player's mark double-figures in kills. Junior Gabby Jolly recorded a career-high .538 hitting percentage, with 16 kills on 26 swings. Natalie Loos followed in Jolly's footsteps by tallying her hitting percentage and blasting 11 kills on 23 swings. On Saturday, the Gaels defeated Gonzaga in straight-sets. Again, Jolly and Loos led the way, finishing with double-digits in kills. This improves their record to 7-6 in WCC.

Men's soccer edged out San Francisco 2-1 in the 101st minute on Friday afternoon. Junior Nathan Arambula scored his first career goal off a free-kick. SMC outshot USF 17-4, including a 9-0 edge in the second-half. Sunday afternoon however, the Gaels dropped a 2-1 loss to Santa Clara. The team heads into the final weekend of WCC action in first-place, with four teams just one point back. Julian Godinez scored the only goal for the Gaels on a nice pass from Agustin Cazarez. Overall, they finished with a 13-11 edge in shots and 3-2 in corner kicks.

The Saint Mary's women's soccer team competed in their final game of the season. They suffered a 4-1 loss to Brigham Young, still finishing with their first 10-win season since 2001. The Gaels will now wait to see if they make the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection. Daelyn Paul scored the only goal, her second of the year, while Jordan Marada's 30 point season is now the eighth highest single-season mark at SMC.

Finally, cross country was invited to have six players participate in the Doc Adams Invitational at the Putah Creek Reserve Course in Davis, California. Tony Venegas, Chris Garcia, and Justin Jayme participated in the men's 8K race. As for the women's 6K, Jacqueline Danens, Alex Choy, and Madison Thompson ran for the Gaels.
