SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team earned a 25-17, 27-25, 25-20 win over Boise State on Saturday morning in the Sacramento State Invitational. The Gaels will go for an undefeated tournament when it takes on Sacramento State tonight at 7:30 p.m.
With the win, Saint Mary's improves to 3-2, while Boise State drops to 1-4.
Against Boise State, the Gaels were led by Lauren Corp with 13 kills while Gabby Jolly added 12 kills on .857 hitting. Samantha Tinsley added nine kills on .450 hitting while Kristina Graven chipped in with eight kills and 10 digs. As a team, SMC hit at a .436 clip as Dalas Dodd ran the offense with 38 assists and five digs.
In the first set against Boise State, the Gaels and Broncos were tied up at 12-12 before SMC went on a 7-2 run, capped by a Katie Reininger kill to give SMC a 19-14 advantage. BSU got within three points but the Gaels ended the set with five consecutive points to close it out at 25-17.
In the second set, SMC took a 15-9 lead but BSU came back within 15-13 and later trailed 18-16. Graven sent down back-to-back kills to give SMC back its four-point advantage at 20-16. SMC led 24-20 and looked to have a good grasp on the set but BSU stormed back with four consecutive points to tie it up at 24-24. SMC never let BSU serve for the set as Corp slammed down two kills and a Bronco error gave SMC the 27-25 second set win.
In the third set a block by Dodd and Jolly gave SMC a 15-14 lead, its first lead since an early 7-6 edge. With the set all tied at 17-17, two Corp kills and two BSU errors pushed the Gaels on top 21-17. After BSU came within 22-19, the Gaels finished off the match on a 3-1 run to win 25-20, capped by a Reininger kill.
Saint Mary's will play against Sacramento State in the final match of the tourney at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
