CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Former Saint Mary's basketball standout Matthew Dellavedova has been officially named to the 20-man training camp roster for the Cleveland Cavaliers, the NBA club announced at its annual media day today.
Dellavedova, a native of Maryborough, Victoria, Australia, played with the Cavaliers during last summer's NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Despite going undrafted in last spring's NBA Draft, he is one of seven rookies listed on the roster and is reportedly a strong candidate to make the team as a third point guard.
The Gaels' all-time leader in scoring, 3-point field goals, free throw percentage, assists, appearances and starts, Dellavedova was a three-time all-West Coast Conference selection and a two-time Capital One Academic All-America ® honoree.
He was named the WCC Player of the Year as a junior and earned the league's Mike Gilleran Scholar-Athlete of the Year award as a senior.
Dellavedova led the Gaels to an impressive 105-28 record as a starter, four-straight postseason appearances and 25-win seasons. During his collegiate career, Saint Mary's won two regular-season WCC championships, two WCC Tournament titles and advanced to the league tournament final four times.
Last summer, he combined with former Saint Mary's guard Patrick Mills to form the starting backcourt for the Australian National Team that advanced to the quarterfinals at the London Olympics.
Dellavedova is one of three Gaels in NBA training camps this month, along with Mills, a San Antonio Spurs guard, and Mickey McConnell, who is training with the Dallas Mavericks.
The Cavaliers' training camp opens tomorrow at Cleveland Clinic Courts. The team's first of eight preseason games is scheduled for Oct. 8 at Quicken Loans Arena.
