MTEN | Hunt, Weber Win But Gaels Drop Season Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team showed its strength at the top of the lineup but Fresno State pulled out a few tough wins in the middle of the lineup as the Gaels dropped a 5-2 decision to the Bulldogs in the 2015 season opener hosted by Cal Poly.

Fresno State (1-1) already had a match under its belt entering Saturday's action, having lost to the host Mustangs on Friday. And, the Bulldogs were eager to get on the positive side of the ledger right away against Saint Mary's (0-1) earning wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles to pick up the first point of the day on a blustery morning and afternoon on California's Central Coast.

That script stayed the same for the first two singles matches, with Fresno State earning straight-sets wins at No. 5 and 6 to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Saint Mary's didn't go quietly though, and two players who showed their skills throughout a strong fall continued that momentum in the first match of the spring. At No. 1, Arthur Weber cruised to his first spring win as a Gael, beating Adam Glynn 6-2, 6-3 to give SMC its first point of the day.

Shortly after Weber got the Gaels on the board, Thomas Alexander Hunt narrowed the gap even further by kicking off his junior season with a win of his own. The New Zealand native won a first-set tiebreaker 7-4 against Sai Kartik Nakireddi, then played even stronger tennis in the second set en route to a 6-3 match-clinching win.

Wil Martin jumped out to a good start at No. 3, winning the first set 6-3 against Euan McIntosh with chances later in the match to turn the decision in his favor. That would eventually be the spot where Fresno State clinched the match though, as McIntosh rallied to win the second 6-3 and then clinched the match with a 6-4 win in the third. Samuel Bloore also forced three sets for the Gaels at No. 4, playing a strong match through the first two sets but Youssef Hassan won a third-set super-tiebreaker to give Fresno its fifth win of the day.

Saint Mary's won't have to wait long to get back on the court with an 11 a.m. match against Cal Poly set for Sunday. The Gaels then return home and get back to work on the practice court before hosting their 2015 home opener on Feb. 1 against Sonoma State.
