SEATTLE, Wash. -- Match one of a two-match trip to the University of Washington didn't go according to plan for the Saint Mary's men's tennis team as the Gaels got a set win at No. 1 singles but that was all as they fell 4-0 to No. 36-ranked Indiana.
Indiana (8-3) got started early on Saturday, scoring 6-3 wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles to clinch the first point of the day. The Hoosiers carried that roll into singles, winning on courts 2 and 5 to come within a point of clinching the match win.
Before a win on court 3 wrapped up the day's proceedings, Saint Mary's did manage to pull out a tense set win at No. 1. Arthur Weber went to a tie-breaker against Sam Monette and the two needed extra points to decide a winner with Weber pulling out an 11-9 win to take the first set. The match went unfinished when Indiana clinched at No. 3.
Saint Mary's work in the Pacific Northwest isn't quite done. The Gaels return to the court Sunday at noon when they take on host Washington. The Huskies enter the match ranked No. 48 in the nation. Saint Mary's returns to Korth Tennis Complex on March 18-19 when Holy Names and Navy visit for non-conference matches.
