OGDEN, Utah -- A clean sweep of doubles got the Saint Mary's men's tennis team started on a good note but host Weber State cleaned up from there as the Wildcats won all six singles matches to take a 6-1 decision.
Playing the first of two consecutive matches at much higher altitude than its used to, Saint Mary's looked sharp to begin the day. The wins came in order, beginning on court 1 when Arthur Weber and Thomas Alexander Hunt picked up a 7-5 victory over Sanjay Goswami and Stefan Cooper. On court 2, James Markiewicz and Wil Martin clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Todd Fought and Jakob Gewert while on court 3, Samuel Bloore and Jacob Lagman prevailed 6-4 against Jack Yin and Landon Barlow.
The good feelings that came with a strong start didn't last long. Weber State got wins on courts 2, 4 and 5 to come within a point of clinching and Cooper scored the decisive point, beating Bloore 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 on court 3. Bloore was one of three Gaels to take their match to three sets, but the Wildcats pulled the win out in each.
Tuesday's match was the first of two in the state of Utah for Saint Mary's. The Gaels open West Coast Conference play on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. (PT) against BYU. A three-match trip concludes on Sunday at UCLA. SMC returns to Korth Tennis Complex on Feb. 15 at noon when it hosts UC Davis.
