LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Saint Mary's men's tennis team showed a familiar brand of fight but it wasn't enough against host Loyola Marymount as the Gaels fell 5-0 in Los Angeles.
Loyola Marymount (13-9, 3-5 West Coast Conference) got off to a good start by taking the doubles point. Wins at No. 1 and 3 made Saint Mary's lead at No. 2 a moot point as the Lions clinched the opening point thanks to a win at No. 1 by Charles Boyce and Cristobal Rivera.
Wins at No. 4, 3 and 2 singles clinched the overall match victory, and play was halted after the Lions won again at No. 6. But, though the Gaels didn't come up with a point, they still showed the resolve that has become a hallmark late in the 2015 season. Nash Vollenweider won the first set 7-5 at No. 5 and led 4-3 in the second when play was halted. Fellow freshman Matthew Campana fought valiantly at No. 6, as did senior Samuel Bloore at No. 2.
Saint Mary's wraps up its trip to the greater Los Angeles area on Saturday when the Gaels square off with Pepperdine in Malibu. After the conclusion of that match, SMC returns home to begin preparations for next week's West Coast Conference Championships in San Diego.
