MORAGA, Calif. — Kiana Quarles of the Saint Mary's women's soccer team was named Muscle Milk Player of the Week after scoring twice on the road at Portland, leading the Gaels to their first win over the Pilots in 15 years.
After a scoreless first half, the senior striker got the scoring started with a nifty goal that crept inside the left post at the 58 minutes, 50 seconds mark. Hannah Diaz added a goal eight minutes later to give SMC a 2-0 advantage.
Quarles put the exclamation point on the victory with her second goal of the match in the 82nd minute. Samantha Dion assisted Quarles again after helping on her first score as well.
Sunday's victory was the second time this season the Gaels beat a team within the top-50 in the NCAA RPI. SMC defeated California (No. 10 RPI) earlier in the season, 2-0.
Saint Mary's continues its West Coast Conference schedule with two home games this week. The Gaels host No. 5 BYU on Thursday and take on San Diego on Saturday. Both games kick off at 3:30 p.m. at Saint Mary's Stadium.
