Gael Report: Soccer Host WCC Matches, Volleyball Travels South

MORAGA, Calif. — Both the Saint Mary's men's and women's soccer teams host West Coast Conference matches at Saint Mary's Stadium this weekend while the Gaels' volleyball team heads to Southern California looking to extend its winning streak. The rowing team also begins its fall season at the Head of American.

MSOC | Gaels Host Santa Clara in Pivotal Conference Match

After last weekend's 1-0 win over Bay Area rivals San Francisco, the Saint Mary's men's soccer team (6-7-3, 2-2 WCC) will host Santa Clara (5-7-0, 0-3 WCC) for another vital conference match on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.

Saint Mary's is currently fourth in the West Coast Conference standings thanks to gritty defense, and Joseph Restani's game winning goal versus USF. Leading the Gaels with three goals on the season, Restani was named WCC Player of the Week for his performance against the Dons.

Along with Restani, the Gaels defense played tough all day and held the Dons scoreless. Andrew Konstantino started in goal, and delivered 52 minutes of spectacular work. The junior delivered six saves before being relieved by Remi Prieur who completed the remainder of the match.

Santa Clara is currently riding a five match winless streak. After losing at Gonzaga and Portland, the Broncos are coming off a tie at Pacific, 1-1.

WSOC | No. 5 BYU, San Diego on Tap for Gaels

The Saint Mary's women's soccer team (3-12-2, 1-5 WCC) return home this week for a pair of conference clashes. The Gaels will host No. 5 BYU (13-2-1, 4-1-1 WCC) on Thursday, 3:30 p.m. and then face San Diego (8-7-1, 3-3 WCC) on Saturday, Oct. 29 for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Gaels are coming off one of the best performances of the season with a 3-0 win at Portland. The win was the team's first at the Pilots in 15 years. Kiana Quarles scored a brace to lead the Gaels, with both goals coming from Samantha Dion assists.

The fifth ranked Cougars come to town with back-to-back wins at Portland and San Diego. BYU striker, Ashley Hatch makes her return to the Cougars after serving as a member of the U.S. national team. Hatch is second in the nation with 15 goals scored. The Cougars rank fourth in the latest NCAA RPI rankings.

After hosting BYU, the Gaels will face another tough competitor in the Toreros, who rank within the top-50 RPI rankings (No. 46). USD currently sits fifth in the conference and lost a narrow 2-1 decision to BYU. Among the top ranked defensive units, the Toreros are led by keeper Amber Michel is second in conference with six clean sheets.

VB | Gaels Travel South Looking To Continue Streak

The Saint Mary's volleyball team earned back-to-back sweeps last week and looks to continue its roll on the road in Southern California against Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on Thursday and Saturday.

The Gaels took 3-0 wins over WCC Bay Area rivals San Francisco and Santa Clara last week. Alexis Salmons was a huge part of the Gaels' success, collecting 22 kills and eight blocks while hitting .645 across the two matches. Saint Mary's faces the Waves at 7 p.m. Thursday, then takes on the Lions at noon Saturday. Both matches will be streamed live on .

Lindsey Knudsen is eight kills away from 500 for her career. The sophomore has averaged 2.86 kills per set so far in her career and is on pace to surpass the milestone this weekend. Mary Hernandez needs six more assists for 1,600 in her career, and Madi Wilkerson just needs two digs for 800 in her career.

ROW | Gaels Begin Fall Schedule With Head Of American

The Saint Mary's women's rowing team travels to The Head of the American on Saturday in Rancho Cordova to start their season after rain and bad weather cancelled their previous race.

The Gaels will have five boats competing in the Collegiate Four (A, B, and C boats), Collegiate Novice Eight, and Collegiate Pair races. Eight Gaels will make their collegiate debuts Saturday racing in the SMC novice eight boat. The Novice Eight race will begin first at 10:15 a.m. with the Collegiate Pair starting shortly after at 10:45 a.m. The Collegiate Four starts at 3 p.m.
