Karman Named Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's men's soccer forward Frederick Karman was named Muscle Milk Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 25-Oct. 2 after he scored two goals Saturday, the second one coming in overtime, to hand Saint Mary's a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over No. 17 West Virginia, 2,200 miles away from home at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Already with one goal in hand, Karman gave the Gaels (3-5-3) the golden goal victory 5 minutes, 17 seconds into the first overtime period. He was opportunistic on the day, scoring his first goal on a rebound to give SMC a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute, then doing it again in the 96th minute. The ball was loose inside the box following a shot and he put it in for the victory.

Karman was an offensive force for the Gaels Saturday, leading all players with five shots and putting four of them on goal. Karman's first goal of the game – and the season – came in the 52nd minute off a corner kick. Once the ball was served into the box, a header shot was saved by WVU goalkeeper Jose Santos, but the rebound fell at his feet, where Karman found an opening from one yard out to break scoreless match.

The Gaels continue their East Coast swing on Monday at Pittsburgh. They open WCC play Sunday at Pacific. Fans can get all live coverage of SMC men's soccer on the team's "GaelVision" Gameday Central page.
