MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's women's soccer's Hannah Diaz was named the Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week after scoring two unanswered goals Sunday to lead the Gaels to a 2-1 comeback victory at Sacramento State.
It was Diaz's first multi-goal game of her career and gave her three goals in 2016. Diaz's scores came in the 68th and 77th minutes to give Saint Mary's (2-7-1) the win. It was the Gaels' first come-from behind win in five years. SMC upset then-No. 15 UC Irvine on the road with two unanswered goals on Sept. 16, 2011.
Diaz's first goal came off an assist from goalkeeper Julia McDonald 23 minutes into the second half. McDonald's free kick from the top of the penalty area found Diaz on the run, where she dribbled into Sacramento State's box and fired to the far post to tie the game at 1-1.
Diaz put SMC ahead for good when Diaz scored with just 13 1/2 minutes left. Jasmine Edwards fed her a lead pass, allowing Diaz to use her speed to blow past the Sacramento State defender. She again shot to the far post and tucked it in, giving the Gaels their 2-1 winning score.
Saint Mary's returns for a lone home game on Saturday versus UC Davis. It is the Gaels' final non-conference match before starting West Coast Conference play on the road.
