SAN FRANCISCO - The Saint Mary's volleyball team swept rival San Francisco for the second time this season, downing the Dons 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-18) in a West Coast Conference match at the War Memorial Gymnasium at Sobrato Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team could create any space early on in the first set, as no lead was ever bigger than two points with eight ties and three lead changes. But Saint Mary's (6-13, 2-7 WCC) would go on a 10-1 run to finally pull away, powered by four kills from Sienna Young.
- The Gaels dominated the second set from the first serve, getting out to leads of 8-1, 14-2 and 21-4 before winning 25-13. Madison Baumann made her career debut in the set, notching her first career kill to make it 20-4.
- Saint Mary's broke open another close set with a 10-2 run in the third, going on to win 25-18. The Gaels had 15 kills in the set, equaling their total in set one. A service ace by Emily Bible clinched the match.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS - Young had seven kills in the first set alone and finished with a match-high 14. She hit .650 with just one error.
- Bible had 11 digs and tied a match-high with three service aces. Morgan Hughes also had three aces to go with her five kills.
- Saint Mary's hit .350 in the match and held San Francisco to just .105 hitting. The Gaels hit .414 in the first set alone and held USF to -.074 in set two
COMING UP - Saint Mary's travels to the South Bay on Saturday to face rival Santa Clara at 1 p.m. The Gaels then return home to host Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on Thursday and Oct. 28, respectively.
