PROVO, Utah - Three first half goals by the opposition proved to be insurmountable for the Gaels on Saturday as Saint Mary's fell to the Cougars 4-1 on the road.
The loss moved Saint Mary's to 6-8 on the year and 2-2 in WCC play while BYU improved to 4-5-3 and 1-1 in conference.
The Cougars scored in the 14th minute to take the early 1-0 lead but cracked open a big lead just over 10 minutes later when they scored two goals only 37 seconds apart.
Saint Mary's had ample chances during the match and finally cashed in during the 51st minute when Jaylen Crim delivered a strike to the top right corner of the net for her first goal this season.
THE GOALS
- BYU (1-0): The Cougars jumped out to an early lead as Bizzy Bowen collected a deflection and scored on the left side for her second goal of the season.
- BYU (2-0): After assisting on the first goal, Madie Matthews beat Gaels' goalie Sarah Sawatsky on a one-on-one play with a shot to the left corner in the 26th minute.
- BYU (3-0): Just 37 seconds after Matthews' goal, Rachel Bingham set up Avery Walker with a cross that led to the Cougars' third goal of the first half.
- BYU (4-0): Matthews' notched her second goal of the match on a shot from the top of the box in the 51st minute.
- Saint Mary's (4-1): Crim responded quickly to the Cougars' goal and scored an unassisted goal less than a minute later to foil BYU's shutout attempt.

- "Although the score does not show it, I thought that was the most competitive we have been with BYU since I've been here."
- "The girls responded well in the second half and got a goal and had several other chances to score."
- "I do feel we got better today and will bounce back against Santa Clara."
QUICK NOTES
- SMC is still tied for first in the WCC standings with six conference points.
- Hannah Diaz led the club with four shots on Saturday.
- Sarah Sawatzky made three saves for the Gaels in the loss.
- BYU outshot the Gaels 14-11 in the match.
- Seven Gaels played at least 80 minutes on Saturday.

- The Gaels won't have any matches next week but will return to action on Oct. 20 versus Santa Clara before hosting San Francisco on the 22nd.
