LINCOLN, Neb. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team earned its first two victories of 2017 on Friday, going 2-0 on the first day of the Ameritas Players Invitational with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20) win over Oral Roberts and a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-6) sweep over University of Maryland, Baltimore County at Nebraska's Bob Devaney Sports Center.
ON THE DAY
- The Gaels (2-3) hit .333 or better in four of the seven sets they played.
- Four different Gaels (Lindsey Calvin, Morgan Hughes, Payton Rund, Sienna Young) had double-digit kill performances.
- Saint Mary's averaged double-digit blocks again with 20 total in two matches.
VS. ORAL ROBERTS
- Saint Mary's came from behind in each of the three sets it won and in the match overall after narrowly dropping the first set, 25-23.
- Hughes had her first double-digit kill performance for Saint Mary's with 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
- Young notched a career-high 11 kills while hitting .455.
- Alexsa Parker tallied her first double-double as a Gael with 26 assists and 12 digs.
VS. UMBC
- The Gaels also had to overcome multi-point deficits in sets one and two versus the Retrievers en route to their first sweep of 2017.
- SMC won set three in dominating fashion, jumping out to an 11-0 lead before UMBC scored its first point. They led 12-1 and 18-3 during the set.
- Rund led the attack with 11 kills.
- Saint Mary's hit .337 in the match after hitting an impressive .516 in the first set alone.
COMING UP
- SMC's two wins Friday set up a de-facto "championship" game with host No. 12 Nebraska at noon PDT Saturday.
- The Huskers will be Saint Mary's third top-15 ranked opponent in six matches to start the year.
