PORTLAND, Ore. - Another balanced effort Saturday powered the Saint Mary's women's volleyball team's play, but host Portland was able to take leads in each set and hold them en route to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) West Coast Conference sweep at the Chiles Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· Portland (10-4, 1-1 WCC) grabbed leads within the first five points of both set one and set three, then led the rest of the way to take both sets.
· Saint Mary's (4-8, 0-2 WCC) led 13-9 in set two, but the Pilots went on a 10-2 run to take a 19-15 lead and secure a 2-0 match lead at the time.
· The Gaels' defense did well with 49 digs and 10 total blocks, but Portland's defended even better with 57 digs. Three Pilots had double-figure digs.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
· Portland's Hannah Troutman led all players with 19 kills. She had a double-double with 14 digs and also added two blocks and a service ace.
· Sarah Chase and Madi Wilkerson both had 14 digs. Wilkerson's career total moved to 1,058, putting her 69 digs behind No. 6 all-time at Saint Mary's.
· Lindsey Calvin led Saint Mary's in kills for the third straight match, putting down nine. Morgan Hughes led all players with six blocks.
COMING UP
· Saint Mary's returns home at 7 p.m. Tuesday to host rival San Francisco. It then heads to Southern California to face Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
