MTEN | Doubles Teams Win Big on Final Day of SMC Invite

Saint Mary's had two doubles pairs win their bracket on Sunday to end the tournament on a high note.

MORAGA, Calif. — In the third and final day of competition at the Saint Mary's Invitational this weekend, the Gaels won two doubles bracket to finish the tournament with a bang.

In the single-elimination Doubles B bracket, Abhishek Bastola and David Abfalter took on Iwahiro/Scemanenco from UC Davis in the finals round. The Gaels' duo earned their fourth win of the tournament with an 8-4 score to be named champions of their bracket and it was their second consecutive win over opponents from UC Davis.

Bastola and Abfalter dominated their competitors during the tournament with match scores of 8-5, 8-3, 8-5, and 8-4.

In the Doubles B consolation bracket, Boris Reckow and Akbar Mamirov played against Albayouk/Gilbert from Sacramento State in the finals round as well. The Gaels' and Hornets' pairings went down to the wire but Saint Mary's would exit victorious with an 8-7(1) win.

In singles play, Saint Mary's had two competitors reach the semifinal rounds of their respective brackets. Daniel Krutik came from behind to win his quarterfinals match 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 while David Abfalter also won in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the semifinals before being eliminated.
