WSOC | Gaels Shutout by Bulldogs in Spokane

Saint Mary's dropped their second road contest of the weekend to Gonzaga on Sunday afternoon.

SPOKANE, Wash. — For the second time this weekend, a quick series of goals hurt the Gaels as Saint Mary's dropped their Sunday contest to Gonzaga, 3-0. SMC fell to 6-6-2 (1-2-1 WCC) with the loss while Gonzaga improved to 8-3-2 (3-1 WCC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite a strong offensive push in the second half, Saint Mary's could not get a goal across against the Gonzaga defense. The Gaels fired off eight shots in the final 45 minutes and forced the Bulldogs to make five saves during the match. SMC has had some early offensive struggles in conference play with only one goal in their four WCC matches thus far.

Kailana Kaeo took a season-high three shots in the match to lead the Gaels in a 10-shot effort. Jordyn Cunningham also chipped in with two shots of her own.

Maleah Milner and Sarah Sawatzky each played one half during Sunday's match and tallied one save a piece. Milner has started every match for the Gaels this season as a sophomore.

Gonzaga took an early lead in the contest as India Jencks connected on a close-range goal for her fifth score of the season. Just two and a half minutes later, Ariana Pumpelly connected into the upper right corner from far outside the box to double the Bulldogs' lead. Jencks picked up her third point of the game as she assisted Brooke Weedman's 54th minute score to secure the win for GU.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
  • "We gave up an early goal and that hurt us. In this conference, those are hard to come back from. We performed much better in the second half but we need to figure out how to compete for the entire 90 minutes."
QUICK FACTS
  • Saint Mary's is now 14-10-2 all-time against the Bulldogs.
  • Sunday's match was the first time since 2007 that the Gaels have been shutout by Gonzaga.
  • SMC allowed only one corner kick in the match.
UP NEXT: NO. 4 SANTA CLARA
  • The Gaels will play their toughest opponent of the year next week as they travel to take on the current-No. 4 Broncos. More information and links to the match can be found on the Gaels' schedule page.
