SMC Athletics Receives Historic Gift For Student Athlete Performance Complex

The Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation Provides A Generous Contribution In Support Of Phase II

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's College Director of Athletics Mike Matoso announced today that the Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation has agreed to a $3 million gift commitment to support Phase II of the Student Athlete Performance Complex (SAPC).

This gift is the largest contribution to benefit student-athletes in the history of Saint Mary's Athletics, and will allow the College to move forward with Phase II of the SAPC.

"In Saint Mary's, God created a very special place on this earth," Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation Trustee Bernie Orsi, '65 said. "The College's work with future generations should and must be sustained."

Following completion of Phase I this past summer, Phase II will include a new student-athlete weight room and further renovations to McKeon Pavilion, including restrooms, locker rooms, and team room enhancements for men's basketball, women's basketball, and women's volleyball.

"I am so grateful for the continued generosity from the Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation. The Foundation has been a long-time philanthropic partner of Saint Mary's College and this most recent gift commitment exemplifies their passion for success across the campus," said President James A. Donahue.

"Thank you to the trustees of the Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation, including Bernie Orsi '65 and Lou Giraudo, for this generous gift to Saint Mary's Athletics," Matoso said. "Phase II of the Student Athlete Performance Complex will benefit all student-athletes and will continue to enhance the game-day experience for fans at McKeon Pavilion."

Saint Mary's Athletics completed Phase I of the SAPC in August '18, which included a 48-foot wide video board, new sound system, enhanced wi-fi, lighting, playing surface and branding. The 40-year old building also received seismic retrofitting, life safety enhancements, new ADA restrooms, and a new roof.
