ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - On the final day of the Lobo Classic, Saint Mary's dominated Howard with an 11-3 decision and finished the tournament 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's (8-18) got on the scoreboard right away with three runs in the first inning. Bailey Lotz cranked a three-run home run to left field for her first big fly of the season to score Nikki Alexander and Hannah Chew.
After Howard (2-21) responded with two runs of their own, the Gaels put another three spot on the board in the third inning with freshman Julia McCormack delivering a two-run double down the left field line. McCormack later came around to score on a groundout to the pitcher to push the Gaels lead to four.
McCormack collected another two-RBI double in the fourth inning as Saint Mary's took advantage of a fielding error to score four more times. In the fifth, Halle Sullivan took a 2-0 pitch over the fence to left center for the Gaels' 11th run and the victory via mercy rule.
Eryn McCoy earned her first season of the year as she threw a complete game and struck out six batters. Alexander also had a two-hit game on offense and Lotz scored three times.
UP NEXT: GAUCHO CLASSIC
The Gaels will take two weeks off before returning to play on Mar. 23 at the Gaucho Classic in Santa Barbara. The six-game tournament will feature Saint Mary's, Seattle, Cal State Bakersfield, and the host, UC Santa Barbara.
