BERKELEY, Calif. - Morgan Hughes and Payton Rund won their fifth straight match and beat East Bay rival California's top-ranked pair for the second time this season, but the Gaels fell to the No. 16/19-ranked Golden Bears, 4-1, at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts.

Hughes and Rund beat Cal's (9-1) Alexia Inman and Mima Mirkovic in straight sets, 21-17, 21-10. The pair also beat Cal's top pair of Jessica Gaffney and Iya Lindahl in straight sets on Opening Day on Feb. 24. Hughes and Rund have won five matches in a row dating to March 2 and improved their record at the No. 1 pairs spot to 3-1.

Sarah Chase and Mary Hernandez were the only other SMC pair that won a set against Cal. They won the second set against Bryce Bark and Madison Dueck, 22-20, but were edged in the third set, 15-12. All three other SMC pairs (No. 2, No. 4, No. 5) were swept.

The Gaels host two home matches on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. versus Feather River College. They then face Bay Area rival San Francisco at 1:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at Moraga Commons.
