SAN JOSE, Calif. - Matt Green tallied not only his first career RBI Tuesday, but his first four career RBIs, and Ty Madrigal kept host San Jose State from rallying as the Gaels defeated the Spartans, 5-2, in a non-conference matchup at Municipal Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Green drove in all of the Gaels' first four runs. His first career RBI came on a two-out double to deep left-center field in the second inning that put Saint Mary's (13-9) ahead 1-0. He then gave the Gaels a 3-0 lead in the fourth with a bases-loaded single that brought in two runs. His two-out RBI single in the top of the eight gave the Gaels insurance late in the game at 4-2.
- San Jose State (9-14) got back into it with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sawyer Pittman led off the inning with a solo home run to left field. Johnny Mendoza then made it all the way to third base on a bunt and a groundout after singling, and he would score on a two-out wild pitch to make it 3-2.
- Madrigal (1-0) entered in relief in that bottom of the fifth and stranded the tying run on first with a strikeout. He put himself in a jam to start the sixth with two leadoff singles and a sacrifice bunt that put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. But he would get another strikeout and a flyout to keep SJSU off the scoreboard.
- Saint Mary's added insurance runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to give itself some breathing room after holding on to just a one-run lead for the better part of three innings. Green's fourth RBI made it 4-2 and an RBI fielder's choice by Jackson Thoreson made it 5-2 in the ninth.
NOTABLE NUMBERS - 3 for 3: Green was perfect at the plate Tuesday with a 3 for 3 day. It was his second straight multi-hit game after logging the first of his career Monday at UC Davis.
- 4: Green posted the first four-RBI game of the season for Saint Mary's. The four RBIs accounted for all of the first four RBIs of his career.
- 4 2/3: Starter Conner Loeprich threw his longest outing of the season, pitching 4 2/3 innings and limiting the Spartans to two runs on just three hits. He struck out two and walked two while lowering his season ERA for the second straight outing.
- 9: Saint Mary's drew nine walks in the game. The Gaels' 1 through 5 hitters earned seven of them. SMC was also hit by three pitches, giving them 12 free passes on the day.
