SAN DIEGO -- Another big rally defined Saturday's game two in the West Coast Conference series between Saint Mary's and San Diego, as a five-run sixth followed by shutdown relief pitching led the Gaels to a series-evening, 6-5, win at Fowler Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saint Mary's came from behind for the second straight day with a big rally, taking a 6-3 lead with a five-run sixth. Four of the first five Gaels to bat in the inning got hits, including Edward Haus' RBI single that made it 3-2. Joe Vranesh and Joey Fiske each tallied sacrifice flies to tie the game then go ahead 4-3. Then Jackson Thoreson came through with the biggest hit of the inning, driving home two on a two-out, bases-loaded single to make it 6-3.
- Andrew Hansen made his second relief appearance in as many days, throwing 1 2/3 innings of shutout, no-hit relief to get the Gaels through the seventh and eighth innings after starter Kevin Milam (5-2) exited. Michael Hobbs then rebounded from losing Friday's game on three earned runs, throwing a shutout ninth for his ninth win of the season.
- San Diego cut the Gaels' lead to one in the seventh on a two-run single by Jay Schuyler. But Hansen entered the game and induced an inning-ending double play on the second pitch he threw. San Diego got its leadoff batter on base in the bottom of the ninth, but another double play ended the game. Tora Otsuka flew out to right field, and Jacob Talamante doubled up Paul Kunst at first.
- Also for the second straight day, the Gaels took an early 1-0 lead before falling behind. Milam led off the inning with a double off the top of the left-center field wall. He moved to third on a fly ball, and Conor Thane drove him in with a two-out RBI single through the left side.
NUMBERS TO KNOW - 4: Four Gaels had multi-hit games on Saturday. Milam went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, Matt Green went 2 for 4 with a double and a run, Thane went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Haus went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run.
- 6: Saint Mary's drew six walks offensively. It was the second straight game it had at least six walks after drawing seven on Friday. The last two games mark the first time it has drawn that many walks since March 27.
