BSB | Five Gaels Named WCC All-Academic

May 23, 2018

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Saint Mary's senior Joey Fiske was named to the 2018 West Coast Conference All-Academic First Team for the second straight year while four other SMC student-athletes received honorable mention accolades Wednesday.

Fiske, a biology major with a 3.52 GPA, was also named to the WCC All-Academic First Team last season. He earned Honorable Mention honors in 2016, and was just named 2018 All-WCC Honorable Mention on Tuesday. He played in all 54 of the Gaels' games with 52 starts, playing center field and batting leadoff every game. Fiske hit .288 and had a team-leading 60 hits. Also, he led the Gaels with nine stolen bases and was second on the team with 35 runs scored. Fiske had three separate hit streaks of six games each, his last one coming from May 4-15 in which he had four multi-hit games and batted .556.

Austin Piscotty, Brett Rasso, Jacob Talamante, and Conor Thane all made the WCC All- Academic Honorable Mention list. Piscotty, an accounting major with a 3.41 GPA, played in 42 of the team's 54 games and started 23 of them. After starting at third base on Opening Day, he moved back into the starting lineup on April 13 and stayed there for the rest of the year. The Gaels went on a 12-4 run from April 13-May 5 that got them back in the WCC race with Piscotty in the starting lineup. He hit three home runs from the nine-hole in the order, including a solo shot on April 13 at San Diego. Also, Piscotty had a new career-long hitting streak that reached four games from April 13-17 which included two multi hit games.

Rasso, a business major with a 3.25 GPA, was a regular presence in the Gaels' lineup, appearing in all 54 games with 47 starts in left field. Rasso finished his season fifth in the country and led the WCC with 16 sacrifice bunts. He also had seven stolen bases. Rasso was tied for the fifth-most doubles for the Gaels with eight. Rasso led the outfield with six defensive assists, throwing out two runners at second, two at third and two at home.

Jacob Talamante, an economics major with a 3.20 GPA, played in 35 of the Gaels' 54 games as an important defensive substitute and pinch-runner. Talamante scored five runs as a pinch-runner, including game-tying runs versus Gonzaga (March 29), Pacific (April 20) and Loyola Marymount (May 20), and scored the game-winning run versus BYU on May 3. Also, as a right fielder Talamante started a game-ending and potential game-saving double play at San Diego on April 14, making a running catch and turning to double up runner at first base, securing a 6-5 SMC victory.

Connor Thane, a business major with a 3.33 GPA, was the Gaels' everyday starting shortstop before an injury cut his season short. Thane was having the best offensive season of his career before his injury. He was batting .277 with an on-base percentage of .326 and slugging .301 -- all 100 points better than his career averages. This year, he doubled his career total of multi-hit games in one season with four. Thane also showed a strong glove, committing just one error through the first six weeks of the season.
