TUCSON, Ariz. — Saint Mary's baseball left-handed pitcher Ken Waldichuk was named an All-American Thursday by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, receiving second team honors from the publication after a strong sophomore campaign in the Gaels' starting rotation.
Waldichuk finished his first year in the starting rotation winning the West Coast Conference's pitching Triple Crown, leading the conference in ERA (2.05) and strikeouts (118), and tying for the conference lead in wins with eight. Waldichuk posted seven double-figure strikeout games, including three in conference play. He mowed down a career-high 14 versus San Francisco on April 8 and had two other games with 12 strikeouts. Twice he held opponents to just two hits in his starts while starting the year 6-1 with a miniscule 1.15 ERA in his first nine starts.
Waldichuk was named first team all-WCC earlier this month. His ERA (third) and strikeouts (fourth) both rank among the top-five all-time for single-season performances at Saint Mary's. At the conclusion of the NCAA's regular season, Waldichuk ranked 16th in the country with his 118 strikeouts, 25th with a 0.96 WHIP, and 27th with his 2.05 ERA.
Waldichuk stretches Saint Mary's streak of All-Americans to four straight years. The streak started in 2015 with Zach Kirtley being named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. In 2016, Corbin Burnes was named a second team (Baseball America) and third team (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper) All-American. Last season, Kevin Milam was a two-time third team All-American (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, D1Baseball.com) and a five-time Freshman All-American (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, D1Baseball.com, NCBWA, Perfect Game).
