TEMPE, Ariz. — The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced their All-Academic Teams and Scholar Athletes this week with a list that featured two Saint Mary's men's tennis student-athletes and recognized the Gaels as an All-Academic Team.
Â
Senior Nash Vollenweider and freshman Andy Watterson distinguished themselves as scholar-athletes for having GPAs above 3.50 at the end of the school year. The duo represented two of 4,328 total student-athletes among all three divisions of NCAA, NAIA, and junior college tennis to receive the award from the ITA.
Â
The men's team was also one of 735 college teams to receive the All-Academic Award given to teams whose GPA was 3.20 or above for the school year. Gonzaga, Pacific, and San Francisco were the only other West Coast Conference men's teams to receive the prestigious award.
Â
Vollenweider was a staple for the Gaels as the No. 2 singles player throughout the spring, earning seven wins while also playing along Damon Kesaris for much of the season as the Gaels' top doubles duo. The Queensland, Australia native will be finishing his degree in Kinesiology this school year.
Â
Watterson did not see any game action last season as a true freshman.
Â
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must have met the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
