Four Saint Mary's women's tennis student-athletes earned recognition from the ITA this week for excellent coursework during the school year.
TEMPE, Ariz. — The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced their All-Academic Teams and Scholar Athletes this week with a list that featured four Saint Mary's women's tennis student-athletes and recognized the Gaels as an All-Academic Team.
The four distinguished Gaels to receive Scholar Athlete status were Clementine Clement, Emma Critser, Kareena Manji, and Vanessa Nommensen. The foursome were among over 4,300 student-athletes among all three levels of NCAA , NAIA, and junior college tennis to receive the award.
The women's team was also one of 735 squads to receive the All-Academic Award given to teams whose GPA was 3.20 or above for the school year. The West Coast Conference was strongly represented with seven women's team also earning the honor for excellent team academic success.
The senior Manji provided veteran leadership for the Gaels last season with a team-best 12 singles wins during the spring, including a 6-1 conference record. In the No. 6 singles slot, Nommensen was a strong presence for the Gaels with an 11-5 record while Critser and Clement each picked up seven singles wins a piece during the season. On the doubles court, Crister and Manji formed Saint Mary's most formidable duo with a 9-3 showing during the spring.
As a team, Saint Mary's reached the semifinals of the WCC Championships last season before falling to the eventual-champion and No. 1 seed, Pepperdine.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must have met the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
