Jordyn Cunningham scored in the 108th minute to give the Gaels their first win of the season Friday night.
BURLINGTON, Vt. — In a match played over 2,500 miles from Saint Mary's campus, the Gaels took the Catamounts into double-overtime and eventually pulled through with a 3-2 come-from-behind win on Friday night. SMC improved to 1-2 with the victory while Vermont fell to 0-1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 1-0 just minutes into the match, Saint Mary's clawed their way back into the match as Kaitlin Groleau scored her first collegiate goal in the 30th minute of play. The goal was set up by Jaylen Crim who served a cross to Groleau for a one-timer to beat the Vermont keeper and tie the match.
Shortly into the second half, freshman Maya Alcantara finished a header from Malia Allison's corner kick to give Saint Mary's the 2-1 advantage. Alcantara's goal was her first collegiate score in just her second career game. The helper from Allison was also her first career point as a Gael. Saint Mary's dominated Friday night in the corner kick column with an 11-2 edge in the match.
The Gaels lead lasted for just a few minutes as Vermont responded with the equalizer in the 65th minute. Despite a 10-shot second half effort from Saint Mary's, the teams would finish regulation play deadlocked at 2-all.
With only minutes to spare in the second overtime period, the Gaels snuck out a win as Jordyn Cunningham collected a drop kick from Saint Mary's keeper Maleah Milner and rocketed a shot inside the left post to deliver the Gaels their first win of 2018. The junior's fourth career goal came on her lone shot of the night.
