WSOC | Gaels Fall In Overtime in Home Opener

Hawai'i scored the game-winning goal in 98th minute in overtime to steal a win in Moraga.

MORAGA, Calif. — The Gaels came up just short Thursday evening as Hawai'i scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute of overtime to steal a win at Saint Mary's Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Hawai'i was able to clinch the game when Leialoha Medeiros got ahold of a corner kick and sent it to the right side of the net for the overtime game winner. It was Medeiros' only shot of the game and one of 15 shots for the Rainbow Wahine.

Kailana Kaeo scored the first goal of the game for the Gaels in the 40th minute when she stole the ball from a UH defender and lasered a shot into the right side of the net. The go-ahead goal was her first score of the season and second career goal.

Saint Mary's keeper Maleah Milner finished with four saves in the match, all of which came in the second half or overtime period. Milner preserved the Gaels' lead with her best save of the game in the 63rd minute as she dove to her right to stop a point-blank shot.

The Gaels fired off nine shots during the game and were led by Anyssa Dominguez who had three and Jaylen Crim with two.

UH scored the equalizer goal in the 86th minute of play to force the two teams into overtime as Raisa Strom-Okimoto forced a turnover in the Gaels' zone and scored on a breakaway for her second goal of the season.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
  • "Today's game was tough to lose. We were up late in the game and could not close it out. We felt we did enough to win this game but give Hawai'i credit, they battled back into the match. We made two silly mistakes and it cost us."

  • There were only 13 fouls called between the two teams.
