MSOC | Buzzer-Beater Goal Gives No. 10 Gaels Win over Lobos

Saint Mary's Jakub Svehlik scored with less than half a minute to play in regulation to give Saint Mary's their 10th win of the year.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — With just seconds to spare Wednesday night, Jakub Svehlik proved to be the hero for the Gaels as the junior midfielder scored in the final minute to give Saint Mary's (10-0) a huge road win over New Mexico (3-6).

HOW IT HAPPENED
In the waning seconds of the match, Saint Mary's launched a counter-attack against a Lobos' charge as Jake Rudel hustled down a ball close to the New Mexico goal line. Rudel navigated around the Lobos' keeper and centered a pass back to the middle of the box where Svehlik took a touch and fired a low shot into the net for the game-winner.

The goal was Svehlik's fourth of 2018 and the Czech Republic native now has 11 points this season (four goals, three assists), placing him third in scoring for the Gaels.

The Gaels' defense gave the Lobos few chances to score and surrendered only six shots in the match. It was the sixth time Saint Mary's backline has allowed single-digit shots to their opposition this season and the Gaels are averaging only 8.8 shots against per game.

Remi Prieur once again earned a clean sheet with a one-save performance, his seventh shutout of the season. The Gaels have blanked their opposition eight times this season and have a team-goals against average of just 0.40.

Filippo Zattarin nearly gave Saint Mary's the lead in the 60th minute as his laser shot off a free kick glanced the Lobos' crossbar. Minutes later, Rudel just missed a header high on a close attempt from six yards out.
