VB | Gaels Beat Hofstra For Fifth Straight Win

MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's volleyball team beat Hofstra 3-1 on Saturday night at McKeon Pavilion, to finish the Saint Mary's-San Francisco Invitational with a 2-0 record after back-to-back home victories. The Gaels have now won five straight matches and improve to 6-2 on the season.
 
The Invitational featured four teams, including San Francisco, Southern Utah and Hofstra. Saint Mary's and USF both finished 2-0, Hofstra went 1-2 after beating Southern Utah earlier Saturday and Southern Utah finished 0-3.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels took the first two sets against the Pride, 25-14, 25-23, before Hofstra came back to win the third set 21-25. Saint Mary's responded and took care of business in the fourth set, winning 25-18.
 
The overall attack was led by Lindsey Calvin and Sienna Young. Calvin had 11 kills, hit .357, had 13 digs and five blocks. Young had a match-high 16 kills, hit .344 and had 15 digs.

ALL TOURNAMENT
For the second straight week, senior Lindsey Calvin was named Most Valuable Player. This week, Calvin was named MVP of the SMC-USF Invitational after recording 17 kills and eight blocks against Southern Utah and 11 kills, 13 digs and five blocks against Hofstra.
 
Sienna Young and Alexsa "Crash" Parker were also named to the All-Tournament team. Young had back-to-back double-doubles with 15 kills and 14 digs against Souther Utah and 16 kills and 15 digs against Hofstra. Parker led the Gaels offensive attack with 62 assists, eight digs and four aces against Southern Utah and 41 assists, 11 digs and three kills against Hofstra.
 
The All-Tournament team was rounded out by Kathya Garcia and Emily Zinger from San Francisco, Laura Masciullo from Hofstra and Janet Kalaniuvalu from Southern Utah.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
2 – Senior Emily Bible came off the bench to deliver two aces from the service line. Bible now has nine aces on the season.
 
41 – Setter Alexsa "Crash" Parker had 41 assists, while leading the Gaels to a .253 team hitting percentage against Hofstra. Parker also added 11 digs and one ace.
 
UP NEXT: Saint Mary's continues its four-match homestand with Nevada coming to McKeon Pavilion on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., followed by local rival Cal on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 3 p.m.
