Saint Mary's trailed 2-1 after the third set but fought back to earn the win in their home opener on Friday night.
MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's fought back hard Friday night and earned their fifth victory of the season with a come-from-behind win against Southern Utah in the team's home opener. The Gaels improved to 5-2 while Southern Utah fell to 1-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 2-1 in sets, Saint Mary's rallied to win the fourth set with ease, 25-15, before claiming the match with a 15-11 fifth set score. The Gaels also won the first set with a score of 25-15 and narrowly dropped set 3 at 24-26.
Saint Mary's had three players reach double-digit kills in the match as Lindsey Knudsen, Lindsey Calvin, and Sienna Young all accomplished the feat. Knudsen led the Gaels with 21 kills while Calvin picked up 17 on an impressive .389 hitting percentage. Young had a strong all-around match with 15 kills and a team-leading 14 digs.
Calvin and Alex O'Sullivan provided tough defense at the net all match for Saint Mary's and combined for 15 blocks. Other notable performances from the win were Alexsa Parker's four service aces and 13 digs from the libero Kelsey Knudsen.
Janet Kalaniuvalu led the Thunderbirds with a game-high 22 kills and libero Miahna Waters recorded 17 digs as well. Rylee Rogers and Thea Leiataua also reached double-digits digs with 10 a piece.
