XC | Gaels Set Numerous Personal Bests at Bronco Invite

MORAGA, Calif. – The Gaels continued their string of stellar performances on Saturday at the Bronco Invitational as Kaela Dishion and Anthony Vazquez landed in the top spots for SMC.

Kaela Dishion had a career race today at the Bronco Invite hosted by Santa Clara. The sophomore finished in 10th place, in a deep field that featured 8 reginoally ranked programs. Her time of 20:36 lowered the school record by 13 seconds which was previously held by former Gael, Abby Bolt. Dishion's performance also led an impressive team showing for the women's program. Contributing to the record setting performance were junior Abigayle Mitchell, who finished in 21:03 and is now third on the all-time list and freshman Rayna Stanziano came across in 21:12, good for 4th all-time for the Gaels. Freshman Lauren Kearney had a big PR as well, finishing in 21:38 which also vaulted her into the top-ten list. Rounding out the scoring five was Ellen Burbank, who ran a twenty second PR of 21:50.

On the Men's side, several Gaels finished with new personal bests in what became the best race of the year thus far for the young team. Leading the charge was Anthony Vazaquez in 29th place, who's time of 24:45 puts him just ten second behind Mario Mendoza's tenth-place time on the all-time list. Freshman Lucas Chung also broke the 25-minute mark for the first time this season, finishing in 24:52 which was good for 38th place. Alex Riggsby was another Gael who broke his personal best with a time of 25:03 while Derek D'Amelia finished in personal record time of 25:26 and Tommy Bell rounded out the top five for SMC (25:33).

QUOTABLES

"I wasn't fully aware or sure of what I was capable of going into this race," said Dishion. "But once I locked on to a certain pace and group of people, it just felt like cruise control from there."

"The ladies had a great day today," said head coach Marty Kinsey. "School records aside, we placed well in a deep field and still know we can do better. This was exactly what we needed heading to the conference championships in two weeks. The men had a solid team performance today. It was great to see so many personal bests happen in a single day. Our goal was to close the gap on some of our conference rivals and we did that today."

On the horizon for the Gaels is the West Coast Conference Championships to be held on November 1. More information can be found on the cross country schedule page.
