Saint Mary's won 10 of their 12 matches during the first day of the Bulldog Classic.
FRESNO, Calif. — The Gaels had a fantastic start to the Bulldog Classic on Friday by winning 10 of their 12 matches on the first day of the tournament.
Saint Mary's nearly swept all eight of their singles matches by picking up seven wins. Five of their seven victories came in straight sets.
Abhishek Bastola had the most dominant performance in singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Jackson Hawk and Andy Watterson also only allowed their opponents to win five games in their straight set matches.
Matis Bot battled through a close first set and then closed out his match against Anton De La Puenta from Sac State, 7-6(3), 6-0. James Watt also earned a W in two close sets, 7-6(6), 7-5.
Karlo Divkovic and Akbarmirzo Mamirov also managed to outlast their opponents and advance to the next round after three-set matches. Divkovic went to a tiebreaker in his final two sets while Mamirov bounced back in the final set with a quick 6-2 decision.
All four doubles matches SMC played in went down to the wire but the Gaels managed to pull out three victories. Watt and Reckow teamed up to beat a tandem from Sac State, 8-6, while the duos of Divkovic/Bastola and Hawk/Mamirov grinded out 8-7 wins.
Day two of the tournament continues tomorrow.
