MBB | No. 18 Gaels Host Two Big West Opponents This Week

MORAGA, Calif. — No. 18 Saint Mary's (1-1) will host two more contests this week as they take on Long Beach State on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Cal Poly on Sunday with a 5 p.m. tip-off.

ABOUT LONG BEACH STATE 
The Beach enters Thursday's contest with a 1-2 record with their lone win coming at home against San Diego in a 74-62 victory. Long Beach State fell in their season-opener last week in a close 69-65 decision to UCLA and dropped their most recent contest 86-58 to Stanford.

Chance Hunter leads the team in scoring with 15.0 points per contest while Michael Carter III (12.0) and Colin Slater (8.7) are also pacing the offense. In 63 total minutes of play, Hunter has been at the forefront of Long Beach State's offense as he has made 17 of his 30 field goal attempts and is the team's top rebounder at 4.7 boards per contest. Nobody on the Beach averages more than 30 minutes per game on the court and Carter III leads the team with 27.3 mpg.

Saint Mary's and Long Beach State have only met five times in program history with the Gaels winning the last two games dating back to 1997. In their most recent matchup, SMC defeated the Beach 82-74 in 2010. 

ABOUT CAL POLY
The Mustangs have dropped both of their contests on the road so far this season as they fell 77-63 to Santa Clara and fell 74-67 in their most recent game against North Dakota State. Prior to facing off against Saint Mary's on Sunday, Cal Poly will host their home opener on Friday against NAIA Simpson. 

Sophomore guard Junior Ballard paces Cal Poly's offense with 18.5 points per game this year while averaging 26.6 minutes of action. Only one other Mustang, Jamal Smith, has averaged double-digit points per game (12.0) and Kyle Colvin leads the team in rebounding as he averages six per game. As a team, Cal Poly has made five more field goals than their opponents while averaging six made three-pointers per game compared to their opposition with four.

Saint Mary's owns a 9-6 all-time record over Cal Poly and have dominated in recent years as they are 6-1 dating back to 2006. In their last meeting in 2015, the Gaels defeated the Mustangs by a 30-point difference at home.
