WBB | Gaels Fend Off Aggies in 83-74 Victory

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's improved their home record to a perfect 2-0 on Tuesday as they defeated UC Davis in a 83-74 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • QUARTER 1 | UC Davis scored the initial few points of the contest before Claire Ferguson landed a layup to put the Gaels up on the board. Emily Codding would immediately respond with a layup of her own followed by a jumper from Brianna Simonich to put the Gaels up 6-5. Codding continued to collect points as she nailed back-to-back layups and a rebound to improve SMC's lead. Sam Simons would then add her first couple of points to the board to put the Gaels on a 10-0 run before a timeout was called. Simons continued her momentum with a solid three-pointer followed by a layup to give Saint Mary's an 11-point advantage over the Aggies. SMC held their biggest run of the game (20-0) throughout the remainder of the period when Tyra Moe drained a trey forcing UC Davis to call a timeout. Katie Rathbun entered the game following the timeout and immediately drilled a three-pointer to put the Gaels up 22-5. With just a minute left of the quarter, UC Davis managed to score their first three-pointer of the game but Moe would then hit a layup to end the period with a 24-8 lead.

  • QUARTER 2 | Neither team put up a point in the first two minutes of the second quarter as both teams were highly defensive. The Aggies cut their deficit to 14 when they landed a layup but Taycee Wedin improved the Gaels lead following her first scored points from beyond-the-arc. UC Davis responded with a few points of their own but that did not stop SMC's offense as Codding nailed another solid layup to put the Gaels up 29-17. Wedin drained her second trey of the contest to continue the Gaels' steady pace. Madeline Holland would then enter the match and make her first layup of the game which was then followed by a jumper from Simons. UC Davis then went on to score back-to-back layups going into the half with Saint Mary's still atop the Aggies 38-31.

  • QUARTER 3 | Saint Mary's scored the first few points of the third quarter on a layup from Holland followed by another layup from Simonich to start second half on a solid note. The Aggies and the Gaels kept it close through the middle of the quarter as the teams traded buckets back-and-forth, although SMC continued to remain in the lead. Wedin knocked down her third trey of the contest during the period to add to her perfect shooting from both the field and beyond-the-arc. Moe would drill her second trey of the contest to tie her career-high eight points. UC Davis heightened their performance throughout the quarter as they continued to add points to the board. With less than two minutes to go in the third period, SMC put up four free-throws courtesy of back-to-back fouls from the Aggies. Simons sunk one more layup followed by one from UC Davis before the buzzer to end the quarter 59-54, with the Gaels in the lead.

  • QUARTER 4 | Shortly after the beginning of the final frame, the Aggies pulled within two points of the Gaels (59-57) before Simons responded with a solid three-pointer to improve SMC's lead. UC Davis would tie up the game 62-62 for the first time in the contest but the Gaels slowly pulled away with multiple points scored from Codding and Wedin to put the Gaels up 72-64 and on an 8-0 run. Following the media timeout, Wedin responded to an Aggies' layup with her sixth trey of the contest which secures her new career-high in three-pointers and in total points (18). Within the quarter, Simons recorded her first double-double of the season as she posted 17 points and 13 rebounds. Moe and Holland would each tally free-throws in the final minutes of the period to further the Gaels' lead. The Gaels remained in control through the remainder of the game and eventually recorded the 83-74 victory.
