MBB | Gaels Post Big Win over Sonoma State, 107-56

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's posted their best offensive night of the season on Sunday as they took a 107-56 victory over Sonoma State.

HOW IT HAPPENED
With the 107 points recorded against the Seawolves, SMC scored the most points they have all season and were just 14 shy of the program record for most points in a contest. The last time the Gaels have scored over 100 points was on November 16, 2016 when they beat Prairie View A&M 110-72. Saint Mary's shot 71 percent from the field which broke a program record for highest team field-goal percentage. The Gaels also shot a season-high 60 percent from beyond the arc as they knocked down 17 of their 28 attempts, just two made treys short of their program-high.

Just after the second half started, the Gaels' shooters couldn't miss and made 20 consecutive field goals from the 19 minute mark to the five minute mark of the period. Before their run, SMC led by 13 but after their 20th consecutive make, they led by 48. Saint Mary's made 82 percent of their field goal attempts during the second half.

Jordan Ford was responsible for seven of the Gaels' 13 points in the first five minutes as he hit two deep threes and a free throw to get the offense fired up. Ford went on to score 17 points in the first 20 minutes of action on 4-for-6 from the three-point line. He would end up being the top-scorer for the Gaels as he ended the night with 22 points and five treys.

Aaron Menzies made his first career start for the Gaels and posted his best numbers of the season thus far. He went on to record season-highs in minutes (13), points (nine), rebounds (seven), and assists (three). Malik Fitts recorded the second most rebounds on the team (six) as well as scored 18 points which was good for second on the squad. Kristers Zoriks recorded the most assists on the team with five.

The Gaels ended the night with a total of 33 rebounds while Sonoma State recorded 17 and only five in the second half.

Shortly after the half began, the Gaels went on an 11-0 run including threes from Kristers Zoriks, Krebs and Ford to improve their three-point shooting to 55 percent on the game at that point

Michael Smith was the top scorer for the Seawolves on Sunday night as he tallied 12 points with two successful three-pointers. Smith was one of just four players who made a three-point shot during the contest as Sonoma State shot just 28 percent from beyond the arc and went 6-for-21.

QUOTABLE
"I think the biggest thing was that we turned up the pressure and obviously it worked out, we jumped on them and never looked back." - Elijah Thomas

"We wanted to get in there and be a little bit more aggressive defensively, be a little more disruptive and play harder. Elijah was great out there, he has always put the team first and for him to get the opportunity to show that today was really good to see." - Marcus Schroeder
