BOSTON — CollegeInsider.com announced today their Lou Henson All-Decade Team, identifying the 40 most outstanding players who competed for mid-major college basketball programs between 2010 and 2019. Two Gaels were featured on the list - standout guards Matthew Dellavedova (2009-13) and current senior Jordan Ford.
The voting panel consisted of 21 Division I head coaches, four athletic directors and six senior members of the College Insider staff.
The Lou Henson Award, named for the legendary coach who led New Mexico State and Illinois to tremendous success, is given annually to the nation's best player from a mid-major program.
Dellavedova remains one of the greatest players to ever don a Gaels uniform. As a freshman, he started all 34 games and was instrumental in helping Saint Mary's achieve their greatest postseason run ever by making the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. He would go on to receive three straight First Team All-WCC honors including Player of the Year recognition as junior.
The Aussie's name can be found at the forefront of the program's all-time record book as he ranks first in points scored (1,933), first in 3-point field goals made (288), first in free throw percentage (.860), first in games played (136), second in assists (768), fourth in steals (150), and among the top-10 in several other categories. His number 4 is one of only three jerseys retired in the rafters of University Credit Union Pavilion.
Ford is still continuing to craft his own legacy but is well on his way to being one of the program's all-time greats. His 1,501 career points put him at ninth in SMC history and his 2018-19 total of 716 points was third most ever in a single season. The Folsom, Calif. native will attempt to lead the Gaels to their third NCAA Tournament trip in four years this March - a feat that was only also accomplished by Dellavedova's 2013 graduating class (2010, 2012, 2013).
The complete list of players named to the All-Decade team can be found here.
Saint Mary's returns to the court this Thursday to begin conference play against San Francisco. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. and the game can be seen on ESPNU.
