WBB | Gaels Score Season-High 84 Points in Win Over Cal Poly

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's improved to 4-4 on Saturday after securing the 84-67 victory against Cal Poly.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • QUARTER 1 | Sam Simons put the Gaels on the board early as she nailed her first three-pointer of the game off a solid pass from Tyra Moe. Emily Codding immediately responded with a layup of her own to put SMC up 5-0. Simons continued her momentum from beyond-the-arc as she went on to drain another trey followed by a layup from Brianna Simonich for her first points of the game. Katie Rathbun drilled a trey of her own immediately following the media timeout to improve the Gaels' lead by seven. Both teams remained highly defensive throughout the rest of the period as neither team put up a point through the middle of the period. Taycee Wedin recorded her first three points of the contest after nailing a trey with just over a minute left of action. Codding followed suit with another solid three-pointer to put SMC up by 10 and to end the quarter with Saint Mary's atop Cal poly 19-9.

  • QUARTER 2 | Moe continued the Gaels' momentum into the second quarter when she recorded a layup which was directly followed by a three-pointer from Jordyn Boesel which is good for her second trey of the season. Rathbun would go on to record her second three-pointer of the game before Simonich added two free-throws to the board to improve the Gaels' by 16. Saint Mary's continued to add points to the board as Holland and Simons put up back-to-back buckets. SMC dominated from beyond-the-arc throughout the first two quarters as they shot 45 percent from deep compared to Cal Poly with 17 percent. Cal Poly managed to cut their deficit to 11 but that did not stop SMC's offense as they responded with a three-pointer from Wedin to improve their lead. Following a layup from Simonich, the Gaels would go on an 8-0 run and end the half with a 41-22 lead over the Mustangs.

  • QUARTER 3 | The Gaels continued to hit their shots from beyond the arc as Codding sunk a three to put the first points of the second half on the board. Saint Mary's made their most threes of any period during the third quarter as they went 12-for-18 and nearly matched the number of threes that they had previously made in the whole first half (15). Codding's trey began an 8-0 run for SMC to start the quarter before Cal Poly was able to make a layup after nearly three minutes of action. The two teams began to trade buckets back and forth through the middle of the period, although Saint Mary's primarily shot from the three-point line in the third and remained a steady 15-points ahead of the Mustangs for most of the quarter. As the teams went into the final frame, the Gaels held a 74-44 point advantage over the Mustangs. Both Wedin and Codding recorded nine points off of three treys in the period.

  • QUARTER 4 | Cal Poly scored the first five points out of the gate in the fourth quarter, but Saint Mary's would continue to be outside of the Mustangs' reach for the entire fourth quarter. Despite scoring 23 points in the final period, their most of any quarter thus far, Cal Poly was not able to catch up to SMC. Simons put up the first Gael-points of the fourth quarter on a layup to snap the Mustangs run and put Saint Mary's just four points away from 80 on the night. Rathbun, Simons, and Wedin all contributed points in the final minutes to secure 84 points for the Gaels, their highest scoring contest of the season.

QUOTABLE

"We came out very aggressive today," said head coach Paul Thomas. "We shot the ball well and played fundamentally sound defense. We lost a little focus in the second half, but we bounced back and feel good about winning the game."
