WBB | Big Defensive Numbers Not Enough in Loss to LMU

LOS ANGELES – Saint Mary's came all the way from behind 14 points to take the lead in the third quarter, but Loyola Marymount ultimately prevailed with a strong final period.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • QUARTER 1 | LMU started the game with a 15-4 run as the Lions led by 11 with five minutes to play in the first. The Gaels looked to get back into the game in the final moments of the quarter, going on a 7-point run in the final 90 seconds. Their run cut their 14-point deficit to seven and SMC trailed 22-15 after the opening 10 minutes.
 
  • QUARTER 2 | After three and a half minutes of back-and-forth play, a trey from freshman Sam Simons kept the Gaels' deficit at seven points (30-23). With 4:32 on the clock, a 3-pointer from junior Jasmine Forcadilla made it a 4-point game, but the Lions regained a 7-point advantage, leading 34-27 at the half.
 
  • QUARTER 3 | Back to their old selves, the Gaels went on a 9-point run to open the second half with a 3-pointer from senior Sydney Raggio at the top of the arc tying the contest just one and a half minutes into the quarter. Two minutes later, Raggio scored once again to give Saint Mary's their first lead of the game (36-34). SMC held LMU without a field goal for the first three and a half minutes, but the Lions finally scored at the 6:35 mark, tying the contest at 36 points apiece. The Gaels pulled ahead by four, but the Lions responded with 10 unanswered points to regain a 6-point lead with 1:24 remaining. Junior Claire Ferguson cut the run with a layup, but Loyola Marymount maintained a 6-point lead (48-42) at the end of the third.  
 
  • QUARTER 4 | Four-straight LMU points gave the Lions a 10-point, 52-42 lead to begin the final 10 minutes and they pushed it to 12 on a pair of occasions including with 6:50 remaining. Saint Mary's continued to push in the final minutes, but they ultimately could not overcome the deficit, falling by the final score of 69-56.
 
NUMBERS TO KNOW
  • 16: The Gaels' outrebounded the Lions by 16 (48-32)
  • 19: SMC tied a season-high with 19 offensive rebounds
  • 9: With 12 points and 10 rebounds, Raggio recorded her ninth double-double of the season
  • 8: Raggio is now just eight rebounds away from recording 1,000 boards in her career

Saint Mary's will now head to Malibu to face Pepperdine on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. for their final road game of the regular season.
