GOLF | Gaels Place Sixth in Hawaii

Saint Mary's finished sixth in the John Burns Intercollegiate on Saturday out of 20 teams.
LIHUE, Hawaii — No. 48 Saint Mary's had a strong all-around team performance on the third and final day of the John Burns Intercollegiate to claim sixth place in the field of 20.
THE LEADERBOARD
Michael Slesinski and Blake Hathcoat both tied for 12th in the field of 114 to lead Saint Mary's efforts. Hathcoat shot a 2-under while Slesinski went 1-under to finish at 5-under across the three rounds.
Ethan Ashbrook tied Hathcoat for the best round of the day at 2-under. The freshman birdied three of his final five holes to wrap up the tournament tied for 22nd at 3-under. All five Gaels had below par rounds as Ethan Farnam and Ryan Grauman also shot 1-under.
The Gaels rose one spot in the standings on the final day to finish in the top third of the field. Saint Mary's finished ahead of two ranked opponents, No. 49 Arizona and their WCC rival, No. 24 BYU.
No. 11 Arizona State claimed the tournament title with a 26-under combined score while No. Texas A&M (21-under) and No. 2 Duke (19-under) wrapped up the top-3.
BYU standout and the No. 15 golfer in the country Peter Kuest claimed the medalist title outright with a 10-under score. The Aggies' Walker Lee finished one stroke behind Kuest for second place and UC Santa Barbara's Zach Smith landed bronze honors at 8-under.

- For the third straight day, Slesinski eagled the hole No. 1 and was the only player with three eagles in the tournament.
- Hathcoat had the best performances of any player in the tournament on par 5's as he was a combined 10-under.
- The Gaels were the fourth best team on par 3's at 12-over.
- Four Gaels birdied the ninth hole in the final round.
