The Gaels took the first game against Bucknell before falling to Manhattan later on.
MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (6-15) scored 11 runs between their two Saturday games against Bucknell and Manhattan to split the doubleheader.
Game 1
Saint Mary's 6, Bucknell 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
A four run second inning set the tone early for the Gaels to lead them to their third straight victory.
Senior Dylan Linton began the scoring with a two-run double to left center that chased Jayda Alaan and Halle Sullivan home and put the Gaels up 2-0. Linton would come around to score on a Nikki Alexander single through the right side and fellow senior Abbey Mariani capped off the inning with a full count double to right to bring in Alexander.
Freshman Sofia Earle pitched a lights out game in the circle by going all seven innings and allowing just three hits to Bucknell. The lefty struck out five and needed only 90 pitches to capture her third win of the season.
After the Bison (10-15) scored in the top of the fourth, Bailey Lotz responded with an RBI single to put Saint Mary's back up by four. Jaymee Campbell earned the final RBI of the game in the sixth inning with a bases loaded.
Lotz went 3-for-4 in the game as part of the Gaels' 10 hit barrage. Sophomore Jayda Alaan also reached base three times with a single, walk, and hit by pitch and earned a stolen base. Kimiko Zapanta stole her team-leading fifth bag of the season as well.
Game 2
Manhattan 7, Saint Mary's 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's fought back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the game in the sixth but the Jaspers crossed two more in the seventh to spoil the comeback effort.
Freshman shortstop Kalissa Heihn smacked her team-leading third homer of the year in the fifth inning for the Gaels. In the following frame, Heihn reached on an error that allowed SMC to tie the game as pitch runner Mazzie Davies scurried home.
The Gaels had six hits in the game but were unable to capitalize on four Jasper errors as they left six runners on base, including the bases loaded in the fifth and two runners in scoring position in the sixth.
Annie Moore and Lauren Pitney each hit home runs for Manhattan (7-8) to lead their team to victory. Stephanie Kristo earned the win in relief with two no-hit innings.
