SB | McCormack's Homer Leads to Win on Thursday

Julia McCormack hit a 3-run bomb and Eileen Perez pitched a gem to lead Saint Mary's to their seventh win of the year.

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (7-17) had an exciting finish to their first game of the day against Marist (9-12) before dropping the back end to split the doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gaels picked up six hits in the opening contest but none was bigger than Julia McCormack's three-run bomb in the bottom of the sixth that propelled Saint Mary's to a win.

The sophomore's shot cleared the left center wall and was one of three extra base hits for the Gaels in the inning as they rallied late. McCormack finished the game 2-for-3 and co-leads the team with 11 RBIs.

Eileen Perez dazzled on the mound with a complete game win. The sophomore matched her season high with 8 K's and allowed only four hits.

Bailey Lotz, Abbey Mariani, and Kimiko Zapanta also picked up hits for the Gaels.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gaels offense committed four errors and couldn't get clicking on offense as Marist salvaged the final game of the day.

Zapanta had a stellar day at the plate for Saint Mary's with a 3-for-3 showing from the leadoff spot. The outfielder is batting .308 this year after leading the team last year in batting average.

Calista Phippen advanced to 7-0 with a complete game shutout. The starter struck out two and scattered seven hits to pick up the win. 14 of the 21 outs recorded by Phippen came via the fly ball.

Sofia Earle took the loss to move to 3-4 on the season. The freshman allowed three runs in 2.1 innings of work. Perez finished the contest with one and two-thirds scoreless frames.
