SB | Gaels Fall to CSUN, No. 1 UCLA

Saint Mary's managed only two hits on the day in Northridge.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Saint Mary's had a tough day at the plate against CSUN and No. 1 UCLA as they fell in both morning contests.

Game 1
CSUN 6, Saint Mary's 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

Matadors' pitcher Jillian James had a no-hitter going until the last inning when senior Bailey Lotz doubled to right center. Lotz had the only hit of the game for SMC and also drew a walk but the Gaels never sent more than four batters to the plate in any inning.

Eryn McCoy (3-3) started in the circle and allowed just one earned run over 3.2 innings while striking out three. The Gaels had four errors in the game which allowed for three unearned runs for CSUN (16-16). Sofia Earle also struck out three batters in 2.1 frames of relief.

James threw a complete game shutout and sent down seven batters via the strikeout for her 10th win of the season. She retired 21 of the 26 batters she faced and needed just 101 pitches to pick up the W.

Game 2
No. 1 UCLA 9, Saint Mary's 1 (5)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gaels could only muster up one hit against the top team in the country in five innings of play to wrap up the weekend.

Kimiko Zapanta broke up Megan Faraimo's no hit bid in the fourth with a bunt single. Jayda Alaan earned a base on balls and Lotz reached on an error as the other two Gaels to get on base safely during the game, all three of which came in the fourth.

UCLA (26-1) scored in every inning during the game and had their biggest outbreak in the third as they plated four runs. Following two RBI singles, Rachel Garcia delivered a two-run shot to put the Bruins up 6-0.

The Bruins totaled nine hits and seven walks in the win.
