BASE | Gaels' Offense Goes Wild in Midweek Matchup, Beat SJSU 14-1

MORAGA, Calif. –– The Gaels' offense had a great day on Tuesday and tied their season-high in runs during the 14-1 victory over San Jose State.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Spartans got into trouble in the bottom of the first as junior Joe Vranesh was hit by a pitch, junior Kevin Milam walked, and then sophomore Gabe Giosso was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Senior Eddie Haus then came to the plate and was walked to bring in the first run of the day and put SMC up 1-0. A wild pitch scored Milam from third to put Saint Mary's up by two runs before a foul-out ended the inning.

  • The Gaels kept the hits coming in the bottom of the third as Milam hit a leadoff single to right field followed by a successful bunt from Giosso to put runners on first and second with no outs. Haus then laid down another bunt and loaded the bases for Daniel Mendez. Mendez was then walked to put SMC up 3-0 before freshman Kyle Velazquez singled and junior Conor Thane flied out to score two more runs. Freshman Bryce Willits then hit a single to left field that scored another two runs and the inning ended with SMC on top 7-0.

  • Saint Mary's brought two more runs in during the fourth after two sacrifice flies brought in Milam and Giosso to give the Gaels the 9-0 advantage over San Jose State.

  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, Thane recorded a leadoff walk before Willits hit a double up the left field line and scored the 10th run of the day. Vranesh then hit his seventh homerun of the season to right field and put the Gaels up by 12 runs.

  • Velazquez walked to leadoff the bottom of the sixth inning followed by a homer from Matt Green over the right field wall to give the Gaels two more runs. The 14 runs scored in Tuesday's game tied the season-high number of runs scored for SMC, dating back to the second game of the season against Washington State (Feb. 16).
