Tyler Thornton Claims Rawlings WCC Pitcher of the Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Freshman Tyler Thornton set the tone early in the Gaels' series win over Loyola Marymount. The right-hander produced career-bests in multiple categories in his start against Lions, earning himself the first Rawlings West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week Award of his career.
On Thursday afternoon, he shut down WCC-leading LMU in the series-opener. Thornton tossed a career-high, 8.0 innings pitched, allowing no runs and just two hits while striking out 12 (matches a career-high). The righty struck out the first five batters he faced and seven of the first nine. He leads all SMC starting pitchers with a 2.62 earned run average and is second on the team with 62 strikeouts. Thornton's 5.04 hits allowed per nine innings is ranked 16th in the nation and second in the WCC and his 12.49 strikeouts per nine is ranked 24th in the country and first in the conference.
This is Saint Mary's sixth WCC weekly award of the season - the most honors of any school in the conference.
The Gaels will be back in action this Friday through Sunday as they close out their 7-game homestand against San Diego.
